Today I would like to begin with a story.
There was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a census about mountain gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.
Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the eco-environment there until the very end of her life.
To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timelessreminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.
Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. I have a friend who just started his career as a teacher in a primary school. Weeks ago, he asked me to raise a topic for his mid-term composition test. I was curious why he chose me to give a topic, because he is a teacher himself. He said that he wanted something the students can really show their different ideas. Without thinking, I told him to let his students write about what they would do if they were given one million US dollars. My friend left with satisfaction, and I fell into my old memories.
It reminded me of my old days in primary school. We were learning to do narration in the fifth grade's Chinese class. Our teacher required us to write a composition with the topic "My Most Unforgettable Day" with our real experience.
When papers came back, half of the students wrote about the first day they came to school. The rest of the compositions were all about picking money on the streets and giving it to policemen, or helping a blind man cross the street. Of course I was among them. But I remember very clearly, that one student, only one student gave something different. He wrote about the day that he first kissed a girl. I read his composition. After all these years, I can't recite every word, but I dare to say, that even Shakespeare, may not be able to write as equally good when he was 11 years old. The composition was written out of real experience and genuine emotions. Contrary to those fake stories, it sounds real and natural. But the kid was scored zero. Some wanted to support the panda protection project, some wanted to buy books to enlarge their knowledge. One student even said that he would like to spend his one million dollars on the effort to cure AIDS. I was more astonished to find that a ten- year-old child knew what AIDS really is.
We all have been kids, and we knew what we had once wanted. But, there was no composition about spending the money on video games, nice clothes, chocolates, ice-creams and expensive toys. Like 15 years ago, students won't tell the truth of their hearts.
It has always been our dream to open our children's hearts. We encourage them to describe their dreams, and acted as if we are ready to accept their thoughts. But the fact is that, children are scared by the zero marked on their papers. They are trained to say what we want to hear.

First, globalization urges China to speed up its modernization, which threatens our regard for the harmony between Man and Nature. However, ecological malpractice of such kind goes against the notion of harmonious coexistence in ancient Chinese philosophies. More than 2,000 years ago, long before the concept of environmental protection came into being, DuJiang Weir, a great irrigation project was built in southwestern China's Sichuan province. Moreover, globalization has brought with it intense competition. Traditionally, moderation is a golden principle, presiding over inter-personal relations in China. Ladies and gentlemen,I'm Choco,from 14CPA Canada.I'm here today not just for winning the speech contest,which is amazing enough,but more importantly,the topic fascinates me so much.As a member of AIESEC,an international organization for university students famous for global citizen program，I'm proud to help lots of students go out of their countries to be global volunteers,to make friends with peers all around the world,to experience other culture,to make a little change in local society,above all,to develop a sense of global citizenship.We all have firm belief that there shouldn't be walls between nations.Conflicts occur because people know little about each other,misunderstand each other.If human society has a bright future in peace,there have to be more people with the sense of global citizenship,to share the natural rights together and take responsibility together. Because this is one minute for self-introduction,I just briefly introduce myself in this way: I am a global citizen.China is my bedroom where I usually live,the world is my real home.
【Main part】
I'd like to use the answers to three questions,which is what,why and how, to deliver my speech today.First of all,what are global citizens? We are people who place our indentities with global community above our identities of a particular nation.In other words,we are not abandoning our nationalities or our hometowns,but we have stronger belongings to the globe.We are concerned about every global issue,never less than those in our own countries.
There comes the second question.Many people will ask:" Why do you feel like that? Why do you think more people should feel like that?" Let's look through human's history and there lies the answer. From then to now,it's not difficult to find out that most civilizations have more things in common than differences.We all develop languages,complicated social structures,art,science,commerce,philosophy...Undeniably,we did have wars,but it turned out that there were no winners or losers.We all suffered from the same pain.Families died in battlefield,and houses were detroyed in shells.While in peace,all of us enjoy safe environment and economic growth.Our histories are linked,and so is our future. Everyone of us desires being well off,democracy,cultural prosperity,clean air and water.We all hope that our kids can grow up safe and sound,don't we? Since we share the same feelings,the same hope, humankind is essentially one.If you think that's too big.Let's come down to current situation.Economic globalization is the trend that no one can stop.Investment comes from every corner of the world,and different markets are tightly connected.Cooperation is needed if everyone wants to live better off.Moreover,issues of global level are more noticable than before:climate change,financial crisis,women's right,children's health...Without the sense of global citizenship, no one is willing to sit down and settle down the problems together.
Now move to the last question: how to become a global citizen? As a saying goes:To see,to understand,then to change.One of my friend in AIESEC went to Karachi,Pakistan this winter.Never had she thought that she could see a MacDonald restaurant and hear songs of Taylor Swift right after getting off the plane.What she saw was people living their normal life in the so-called City of Death.Adults going to work,students going to school,just like what we're doing here,although a bullet may fly above their heads the next second.She was also impressed by youngsters in Pakistan,who showed courage,faith and confidence to create a bright future for their country.Not just panic and depress can survive there as the news reports,but also the seed of hope is sprouting.Another friend of mine in AIESEC is from India.His name is Kunal,and he regards himself as a global citizen.He joined AIESEC in India,where he met his lifelong lover,a blonde Russian girl in a local project.When he went to the university of Copenhagen,he joined the AIESEC committee there as well.Now,he is in Canada, running another AIESEC project called Green Power Now,giving advice to the government about environmental protection.Young people like Kunal are changing the world now,with their experience, ability, ambition and the name of global citizens.
My speech is almost finished according to the three questions,but traditionally,speakers have to quote something so today I'd like quote a song by John Lennon.The name is Imagine.

Honorable Judges, fellow students: Good afternoon! Recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?
The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.
The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.
As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. I believe in our future.

most of the water is in the oceans or locked away as ice．the largest volumes of fresh water are stored underground as groundwater，imagine there is only one barrel of water in the world，then there is only a spoon of it on the land，and the water we can use is only a drop of it．now i have to remind all of you here that the single drop of water is never as clean as before，it has been polluted severely by our human beings．
there is a very beautiful river in paris．it is the seine，it runs across the city，people drink coffee, chat on the bank in the day，at night，they enjoy the beautiful scenery in the boat，songs from the river fly into the sky made the river more attractive, the seine is a famous symbol of france；on the west coast of pacific ocean there lies the modern city shanghai，another river which used to be a very important transportation route runs through the center of the city，people respected and regard it as"mother"．it is the"suzhou river，but l believe that few of you would sit beside it，people will be scattered by the terrible smell of water when walk by．i have to say it is extremely dirty! and we all know that a lot of beautiful rivers in the world also are sharing the same fate with suzhou river． who is the devil? i can't help asking．
many human activities and their by-products have the potential to pollute water. please have a look along the banks of the river, large and small industrial enterprises discharge dirty
water, tons of garbage were thrown into the river, the water contained so much that it can't clean itself. compared with the dramatic development in many sides of shanghai, the suzhou river has become a black point of the appearance of city.
fortunately, the government has control the situation now, we are happy to see some parts of the river has become clean again, and we even can find fish sometime.
the unique earth is the only planet full of lives, the water is just like the blood in the active body, protecting water is saving ourselves. not to waste a single drop of water, otherwise, the only drop of water we could keep in the future would be our tear!
my dear friends, mankind still faces a great difficulty in solving the problems of the environment and development, and there is a grand task to perform and along way to go. the middle school students in china will always cooperate with the young people of the world to protect the environment.
